Summer gardening is a great way to cut costs, save trips to the store, learn where/how the vegetables you eat grow and have an awesome hobby. I would advise it to anyone who eats a majority of vegetables. The cost of seeds versus store bought vegetables is insane and should be reason enough for anyone to want to try and grow their own. Not to mention all the GMO and PESTICIDES in store bought vegetables if you aren't buying organic which is EXPENSIVE. DIY gardening is an awesome way to have all your own organic non gmo vegetables and fruit right in your backyard!! At great place to start is here http://www.westcoastseeds.com/
Not only is the website extra helpful for beginners its offers the widest variety of organic non gmo seeds I have ever personally seen. If you're like me and from BC their local too! Can't beat that! If you're an advanced gardener they also offer many eccentric unique hybrids and interesting native plants. West coast seeds is an awesome company and should be supported!
If you don't have a garden plot, don't worry! Many things can be grown in containers inside/outside so even if you live in an apartment there are option! The most important thing you can do is READ YOUR SEED PACKETS CAREFULLY. The best way to grow your seeds will be right on the back and if you have further questions look it up online.
The three most helpful tips of gardening (believe it or not) is.......
WATERING
WEEDING
SUN/SHADE
Make sure your plant gets TONS of water if it doesn't like to be dry which most plants don't. Countless times I've watched other peoples gardens die because they are just too goddamn lazy to go water it. GET A SPRINKLER. If you have a full veggie garden like I do,
You should be watering at least every other day for a half hour-hour. If you're watering everyday a half hour is fine. DO NOT WATER WHEN ITS HOT OUT. It literally cooks your plants roots and it kills them! Water either in early morning or late evening.
THE PROCESS OF WEEDING OUT
You should be weeding for a half hour a night ideally. Thats the best way to always keep your garden looking great, ensure your vegetables and flowers are getting as much sun/water as they can and keep invasive species out of your garden. Spend sometime flipping through a local gardening guide to help differentiate if you aren't familiar with most weeds.
SUN/SHADE
Its really important to read your seed package or gardening guides very carefully according to what you are growing. If a plant doesn't get enough sun it will reach a certain height where it stops growing completely and never ripens or blooms. If a plant gets too much sun it will get baked and dry out very quickly. This is why its really important to make sure your garden has enough space/shape for what seeds your buying. Get to know your garden well. Spend tons of time out there. Create borders with scrap wood or ropes and wires. Measure it if you have to! But usually you can get a pretty good idea from diggin your actual hands in there.
I hope this post gives every vegan whose wishing they could pick their very own tomatoes right out of their backyard the drive to do so. Its easy, its fun, its interesting and its DIY AS HELL. So go outside and dig your garden today!! Whats stopping you!?
